THE PROJECT

Initially, HR sought email-delivered video training, but high turnover hindered its effectiveness. I proposed an eLearning platform, allowing paced learning with quizzes. Despite budget limits, I leveraged WordPress to rapidly build a beta version. The platform evolved beyond eLearning, becoming a hub for job listings, streamlined applications, and employee data collection. It even generated pre-filled contracts from captured data. This flexible solution transformed training, recruitment, and administration at Brighton Palace Pier, surpassing expectations.

Role

I assumed a multifaceted role as the primary designer and project lead.

My Task

My tasks spanned ideation, design, collaboration, resource management, platform development, and strategic decision-making.

March 2020 – Oct 2021

CONTEXT

Brighton Palace Pier serves as an amusement park with food kiosks, a restaurant, two bars, an arcade, and rides. The stock department manages food supply for these divisions, while the deckhands department maintains the pier. Security is overseen by a dedicated team. Workforce scales from 150 employees to 500 during peak months.

Introducing a UX Designer with a Taste for Adventure to the Pier!

Having worked as an IxD assistant researcher and freelancer in Italy, I embraced a new challenge by becoming a customer attendant at Brighton Palace Pier. Thanks to my background as product designer, I offered insightful suggestions for improvements and demonstrated strategic thinking, leading to my engagement in consulting management for design solutions. Initiating an eLearning platform project for HR underscored my creativity, leadership, and project management skills.

In addition to successfully launching this project, here are some of my key achievements:

  • Digital Transformation Catalyst: Spearheaded a digital transformation in HR by conceiving and implementing an innovative eLearning platform that redefined employee training and onboarding methods.
  • Holistic Project Orchestrator: Successfully managed the entire project lifecycle, from ideation to execution, showcasing adeptness in holistic project management and delivering an integrated solution.
  • Design Thinking Pioneer: Introduced design thinking principles to the company trough this project, fostering creative problem-solving and resulting in a dynamic eLearning platform with multifunctional capabilities.
  • Shifted to Employee-Centered Approach: Transitioned from a user-centered design to an employee-centered focus, optimizing engagement and knowledge retention in training materials, elevating the employee experience.

UNCOVERING OPPORTUNITIES

Before I commenced my investigation, a significant problem emerged: varying document versions stored locally, impeding teamwork. To address this, I introduced OneDrive for unified storage, aiming to streamline access and reduce disparities. With documentation organized, I initiated HR needs analysis.

My activities encompassed:

  • Utilized “fly on the wall” technique for comprehensive insight, participating in group interviews to understand employee materials and company expectations.
  • Created service blueprint to address hiring process gaps. Mapped employee journey, revealed touchpoints, and digital enhancement possibilities.
  • Conducted workshops to identify training needs across departments. Extracted common themes for reusable training materials.
  • Employed card sorting, informed by affinity mapping insights, to categorize topics for e-learning platform’s information architecture.
  • Utilized wireframing for platform layout, ensuring intuitive navigation and coherent user interface design.
  • Conducted usability testing to refine platform’s user-friendliness, involving real users to identify and address issues.

Engaging Videos

To optimize the training experience, I embarked on creating concise and engaging training videos. My objective was to maintain each video under a 2-minute duration, a strategy aimed at preventing information overload and preserving the attention of new employees. I meticulously crafted video scripts that encapsulated essential information, followed by the development of storyboards to visually outline the video’s content and flow.

In ensuring the videos were effective and visually appealing, I provided direction for the video editing process. By collaborating with video editors, I ensured that the videos were well-paced, visually coherent, and aligned with the intended learning outcomes. This involvement extended to overseeing the incorporation of graphics, animations, and other visual elements to enhance the educational experience.

Developing the designs

Given the project’s budget constraints and resource limitations, WordPress emerged as the optimal choice for platform development. Its user-friendly interface and extensive plugin ecosystem enabled swift creation of a beta version. This cost-effective approach aligned with available resources, fostering rapid iteration and continuous improvement. WordPress’s adaptability allowed for seamless integration of features like job listings and contract generation, enhancing the platform’s value within the project’s evolving scope.

Results and takeway

As the sole designer for this project, the endeavor spanned approximately a year, influenced by budget constraints and resource availability. My responsibilities encompassed multifaceted leadership roles. I orchestrated the guidance and coordination of the video production team while overseeing the compilation of training content sourced from diverse departmental managers and supervisors. This collaborative effort aimed to harmonize and optimize the training process within the given parameters, ultimately enhancing the onboarding experience at the Brighton Palace Pier.

Leadership Highlights:

  • Strategic Direction: Proposed the shift from video emails to an eLearning platform, aligning the solution with organizational needs and future scalability.
  • Collaborative Coordination: Orchestrated collaboration with departmental managers to gather essential training content, showcasing effective communication and teamwork.
  • Resourceful Decision-Making: Chose WordPress for platform development, making the most of budget constraints while ensuring rapid deployment.
  • Innovative Problem-Solving: Continuously iterated the platform based on user feedback, displaying adaptability, and creative thinking.
  • Scope Expansion: Led the platform’s evolution beyond training, incorporating job listings, streamlined applications, and automated contract generation.
